Changing Education Syllabus
It is about time that the Department of Education of Malaysia should be changed from Exam based curriculum to a knowledge based curriculum.. there is less point actually having an education for the purpose of preparing students to take exams. This way, we only prepare the students to learn whatever in their syllabus just to make sure they have enough knowledge to answer the exam question. This I think is like having a single edge sword.
On the other hand, if we are to make changes to the education syllabus to a knowledge based one, we have to make sure that the changes is enough to be used for the next at least 10 years. Syllabus should not emphasis on the content, but rather on the values of what we want our child to learn in school.
In this Information Technology era, the single most important factor that we need to teach our children is the ability to judge things on their own and have a self discipline. The flow of information now is no longer restricted any factors, so it is imperative that we developed a syllabus that can build up our child's self discipline and also make them able to view any issues in several perspective.
During my secondary school days in MRSM, they have this Lateral Thinking (by Edward De Bono) subject that teach us to think out-of-the box. It turns out that it is one of the most valuable lessons that I have learnt because now, I have already incorporate that type of thinking onto my thinking style. If you asked me what are the teachers teach me in that subject I will do not have many recollection of the content but the important part of it is that I was able to extract the 'gist' of that subject and
apply it in my life. That I think should be the ultimate goal in our education philosophy.
My Thought
